A gravity well is the scientific/science fictional term for the distortion in space-time caused by a massive body such as a planet. The term is a reference to the 3-dimensional analogy of this phenomenon: a depression in an otherwise 2-D sheet. An actual gravity well involves higher-dimensional bending. Science fiction is a form of speculative fiction principally dealing with the impact of imagined science and technology, or both, upon society and persons as individuals. ... The effective force of gravity decreases as the distance from the equator decreases, due to the rotation of the Earth, and the resulting centrifugal force and flattening of the Earth.
Gravity is small unless at least one of the two bodies is large or one body is very dense and the other is close by, but the small gravitational interaction exerted by bodies of ordinary size can fairly easily be detected through experiments such as the Cavendish torsion bar experiment.
Speed of gravity: Einstein's theory of relativity predicts that the speed of gravity (defined as the speed at which changes in location of a mass are propagated to other masses) should be consistent with the speed of light.
