Gray County (standard abbreviation: GY) is a county located in the state of Kansas. As of 2000, the population is 5,904. Its county seat is Cimarron, Kansas⁶.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,252 km² (869 mi²). 2,250 km² (869 mi²) of it is land and 1 km² (0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.05% water.

As of the census² of 2000, there are 5,904 people, 2,045 households, and 1,556 families residing in the county. The population density is 3/km² (7/mi²). There are 2,181 housing units at an average density of 1/km² (2/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 92.31% White, 0.19% Black or African American, 0.46% Native American, 0.10% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 5.42% from other races, and 1.46% from two or more races. 9.81% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,045 households out of which 42.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 67.70% are married couples living together, 5.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.90% are non-families. 21.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.82 and the average family size is 3.31.

In the county the population is spread out with 31.60% under the age of 18, 8.30% from 18 to 24, 27.30% from 25 to 44, 20.20% from 45 to 64, and 12.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 100.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.20 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $40,000, and the median income for a family is $45,299. Males have a median income of $31,519 versus $21,563 for females. The per capita income for the county is $18,632. 9.10% of the population and 6.50% of families are below the poverty line.
