Grayson is a city located in Carter County, Kentucky. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 3,877. It is the county seat of Carter County6.

Grayson is located at 38°20'5" North, 82°56'33" West (38.334738, -82.942368)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 6.5 km˛ (2.5 mi˛). 6.5 km˛ (2.5 mi˛) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 3,877 people, 1,415 households, and 938 families residing in the city. The population density is 598.8/km˛ (1,549.1/mi˛). There are 1,538 housing units at an average density of 237.5/km˛ (614.5/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city is 98.32% White, 0.52% African American, 0.39% Native American, 0.28% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.18% from other races, and 0.28% from two or more races. 0.77% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 1,415 households out of which 31.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.9% are married couples living together, 16.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.7% are non-families. 31.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.31 and the average family size is 2.86.


In the city the population is spread out with 21.9% under the age of 18, 19.0% from 18 to 24, 24.3% from 25 to 44, 18.5% from 45 to 64, and 16.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 83.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 78.0 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $19,683, and the median income for a family is $26,280. Males have a median income of $32,022 versus $18,875 for females. The per capita income for the city is $11,879. 31.4% of the population and 27.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 44.8% of those under the age of 18 and 22.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Grayson County, the fifty-fourth county in order of formation, is located in west-central Kentucky and is partly bounded by Rough River on the north and Nolin River on the southeast.
Many others arrived to settle the area, and on January 25, 1810, Grayson County was established from the western part of Hardin and the eastern part of Ohio County.
Millerstown, the county's oldest incorporated city, was formally established in 1826 on the Nolin River; FALLS OF ROUGH grew as a small village around the Green Sawmill, which began operating in 1823; and Grayson Springs, a summer resort community, opened in 1830 and was at the height of its popularity by 1900.
