While in the link, Changelings experience (according to the Female Changeling often seen) a "merging of form and thought, the sharing of idea and sensation". Star Trek used to be famous for the issues it dealt with in an SF context & They weren't afraid to go out on a limb with ideas.
Star Trek is probably one of the better examples of that kind of show and it has certainly inspired legions of fans to try their hand at fan fiction.
