The Great Swamp Fight was a crucial battle during King Phillip's War, a devastating war fought in 17th century New England in the United States. The Great Swamp Fight occurred near Kingston, Rhode Island in 1675 in retaliation for attacks on colonists, and resulted in the deaths of hundreds of Wampanoag and Narragansett tribe family members at the hands of milita soldiers from Massachusettts and Connecticut. King Phillip's War was one of the deadliest war per capita of any war in American history. The Great Swamp Fight was a final critical blow to the local Native Americans from which they never fully recovered, and ever since Narragansett tribe members have referred to it as the "Great Swamp Massacre." The battle site is located in a swamp near the University of Rhode Island campus.
