Área Metropolitana de Lisboa (Lisbon Metropolitan Area, AML) is a territorial zone that includes 18 municipalities. The Metropolitan Area of Lisbon (AML) is the largest population concentration of the country. In agreement with the preliminary data of the last general census of the population, about 2,661,850 habitants (about ž of the Portuguese population) lived in AML, in 2001, of which 20,9% in the city of Lisbon. About 27,1% of the population of continental Portugal lives in the 3 219 kmē of AML (3,3% of the continental territory of Portugal), and with an active population of about 1,3 million people. With 32,7% of the national employment being located in its territory, the contribution of AML for the Gross Domestic Product surpasses 36%.
