A non-freeway part of the road
A non-freeway part of the road

Greece Interstate 8A, sometimes Greece Interstate 8 is a toll road running from Kifissou avenue, in Athens up to the northeast of Patras. It is a freeway from Kifissou avenue up to Corinth, for about 85km and the rest is an undivided highway with just one lane per direction. The total length is 215 km, but now at the 207th km it intersects the new Patra Beltway. It is signed as E94 from Kifissou Ave in Athens to southwest of Corinth, then it becomes part of E65 from Corinth to Rhion interchange, and E55 from Rhion to north of Patras. It was first opened in the 1960s. The E94 part (Athens-Corinth) was reconstructed to freeway standards from 1993 to 1997. In Kakia Skala pass, new tunnels were constructed from 2001 to 2004, but some are still being constructed and are due to be completed in early 2006. There are 4 toll stations in the entire road at this time: Eleusis Toll booth, Isthmia toll booth, Corinth toll Booth, and Rhion toll booth at the 205th km. Before the completion of the Rhion-Antirrion Bridge, this part of the highway was the only one connecting the Peloponnese to the rest of Greece. The freeway part has 3 lanes per direction. The non-freeway part from Corinth to Patra is one of the most dangerous roads in Greece at this time. It has dangerous curves, and many drivers perform dangerous overpasses, which causes the majority of the accidents.

Construction and reconstruction and renovations had been made in 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996 (except Kakia Skala) and again in 2002, 2003 and 2004 with a high-speed rail and tunnel scheduled to open by 2004 at Kakia Skala. However, a new freeway is planned to be built, partly by widening the existing road and partly constructing new stretches of freeway. Hopefully, its construction will begin in 2006 and be completed in 2012.

Patras Bypass

The bypass of Patra/Patras is a freeway that runs from the Mintilogli exit (GR-9), 8.8 km S of Patras up to the Patras exit, nearly 7 km N of Patras.

The bypass began planning in the 1980s, but construction didn't begin until the 1990s, between Roitika and Mintilogli. Construction reached Dimokratias Street (GR-33) in 1992, the Glafkos river in about the mid-1990s, the tunnels in the late-1990s, and in 2001, the construction of the Patras interchange in the north had reached 99% completion in late-2002. In October of 2002, the perimeter was opened to traffic. As a result, traffic in downtown decreased. The 1980s decade refers to the years from 1980 to 1989, inclusive. ...
