Greene County is a county located in the state of Indiana, and determined by the U.S. Census Bureau to include the mean center of U.S. population in 1930. As of 2000, the population is 33,157. The county's county seat is Bloomfield, Indiana.


Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,414 km˛ (546 mi˛). 1,403 km˛ (542 mi˛) of it is land and 11 km˛ (4 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.77% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 33,157 people, 13,372 households, and 9,360 families residing in the county. The population density is 24/km˛ (61/mi˛). There are 15,053 housing units at an average density of 11/km˛ (28/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 98.59% White, 0.08% Black or African American, 0.31% Native American, 0.22% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.17% from other races, and 0.61% from two or more races. 0.81% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 13,372 households out of which 31.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.00% are married couples living together, 8.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.00% are non-families. 26.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.44 and the average family size is 2.92.


In the county the population is spread out with 24.70% under the age of 18, 7.70% from 18 to 24, 28.30% from 25 to 44, 24.00% from 45 to 64, and 15.30% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 96.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.60 males.


The median income for a household in the county is $33,998, and the median income for a family is $41,523. Males have a median income of $32,309 versus $21,749 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,834. 11.00% of the population and 8.40% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 14.30% of those under the age of 18 and 9.50% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
