At 6 feet 3 inches and 215 pounds, de Vries was signed by the Edmonton Oilers in 1994 as an undrafted free agent. In 1998 he was traded to the Nashville Predators, but less than a month later was traded to the Colorado Avalanche for a second round draft pick. He played several seasons in Colorado and won the Stanley Cup with them in 2001. In 2003 he signed as a free agent with the New York Rangers, but when that team decided to dump most of its most expensive players near the end of that season he was sent to the Ottawa Senators for Karel Rachunek and prospect Alexandre Giroux. While brought in to help the Senators in the playoffs, they lost in the first round and de Vries was unspectacular. After the lock-out season he was traded along with Marian Hossa in August 23rd, 2005 to the Atlanta Thrashers for Dany Heatley.
