Encyclopedia > Grid connection

In electricity distribution, grid connection is connection to the national grid of power stations, substations and transmission cables for the supply of electric power. Electricity distribution is the penultimate process in the delivery of electric power, the part between transmission and user purchase from an electricity retailer. ... The National Grid is the high-voltage electric power transmission network in Great Britain, connecting power stations and major substations and ensuring that electricity generated anywhere in Great Britain can be used to satisfy demand elsewhere. ... Oil power plant in Iraq Coal power plant in China A power station (also power plant) is a facility for the generation of electric power. ... An aerial substation A substation is the part of an electricity transmission and distribution system where voltage is transformed generally from high to low using transformers. ... Transmission lines in Lund, Sweden Electric power transmission is one process in the delivery of electricity to consumers. ... Transmission lines in Lund, Sweden Electric power, often known as power or electricity, involves the production and delivery of electrical energy in sufficient quantities to operate domestic appliances, office equipment, industrial machinery and provide sufficient energy for both domestic and commercial lighting, heating, cooking and industrial processes. ...

A power station is generally said to have achieved grid connection when it first supplies power outside of its own boundaries. However, a town is only said to have achieved grid connection when it is connected to several redundant sources, generally involving long-distance transmission. In engineering, the duplication of critical components of a system with the intention of increasing reliability of the system is called redundancy. ...

This redundancy is limited. A national grid is not a grid in any strict or mathematical sense, but simply the interconnection of facilities that provides whatever redundancy is available. The exact stage of development at which the supply structure becomes a grid is arbitrary. Similarly, the term national grid is something of an anarchism in many parts of the world, as transmission cables now frequently cross national boundaries. The terms distribution grid for local connections and transmission grid for long-distance transmissions are therefore preferred, but national grid is often still used for the overall structure. GRID can refer to : GRID computing short for gay-related immune deficiency, a former name for AIDS. Indirect Grid Connection of Wind Turbines (674 words)
With indirect grid connection, however, the wind turbine generator runs in its own, separate mini AC-grid, as illustrated in the graphic.
This grid is controlled electronically (using an inverter), so that the frequency of the alternating current in the stator of the generator may be varied.
The advantage of indirect grid connection is that it is possible to run the wind turbine at variable speed.
AspGrid.com - Object Reference: Grid Object (1550 words)
Grid is AspGrid's top-level object that serves as an "object factory" for all other objects.
For a grid to be updateable, your table must contain an identity (AutoNumber) field, and it must be referenced first in the SELECT statement.
Cols is the default method of the Grid object, and therefore the word.Cols may be omitted.
