If you'd care to step to the right a bit, I'd like you to take a look at the novels of Neal Asher.
Asher's novels of the Runcible Universe, 'Gridlinked' and 'The Skinner' offer a slightly skewed version of space opera.
Asher has all the checkpoints -- interstellar travel, lots of planets that are very alien, some alien aliens as well, human intrigue and political machinations.
