Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,855 km˛ (716 mi˛). 1,835 km˛ (708 mi˛) of it is land and 20 km˛ (8 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 1.07% water.
Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,754 people, 1,178 households, and 781 families residing in the county. The population density is 2/km˛ (4/mi˛). There are 1,521 housing units at an average density of 1/km˛ (2/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 99.31% White, 0.00% Black or African American, 0.22% Native American, 0.15% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.15% from other races, and 0.18% from two or more races. 0.40% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 1,178 households out of which 26.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.30% are married couples living together, 4.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.70% are non-families. 31.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 18.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
