Groblersdal's chief magistrate, Hendrik van der Walt, released prisoners from detention because it was a Friday and he did not want them to spend the weekend in prison, he told the Middelburg Regional Court in Mpumalanga on Friday.
He was testifying in the trial against the head of detective services in the Pretoria area, Vincent Ntengo, who is standing trial for "unlawfully" arresting Van der Walt in October last year on charges of defeating the ends of justice.
Lategan allegedly told Van der Walt that she was not able to release Van Zyl, to which he allegedly replied that if she did not he would drive to the police station personally and sign the register.
