Plot
The movie is about a hitman (though that word is never used) named Martin Q. Blank, played by Cusack, who gets an invitation to his 10 year high school reunion in his home town of Grosse Pointe, Michigan. Initially, he doesn't want to go, but his secretary (played by Joan Cusack, John's real-life sister) tricks him into going since, coincidentally, he's been sent on a job there anyway. A hitman (alternately, hit man), also referred to as a contract killer, is a hired assassin, usually in the employ of organized crime. ...

While in Grosse Pointe, Blank reunites with old flame Debi Newberry, played by Driver, who was to be his date to the prom when Martin disappeared without a trace on prom night after recognizing his homicidal urges. This epiphany caused him to join the Army immediately as a way to channel these urges. His service exam revealed "a certain moral flexibility" and he was loaned out to a CIA-sponsored "mechanical operations program" and was a CIA operative before going into business for himself. When asked, Blank readily tells his old friends and acquaintances that he is a professional killer, but they all assume that he is joking and doesn't want to talk about his work. During his stay, Blank is hounded by a rival hitman, Grocer, played by Dan Aykroyd, who wants Blank to join him in a union of hitmen. Blank is also tailed by Felix LaPoubelle ("The garbage can" in French) (Benny Urquidez), a Basque hitman hired to kill him. Additionally, a pair of federal agents (with Grocer as their stoolie), awkwardly wait for him to do a "job" so they can arrest him. However, his infatuation with Debi causes his interest in killing to wane, and he repeatedly puts off the hit. While at the reunion dance with Debi, Blank has a conversation with another alumna about her experience with marriage and new motherhood. Blank experiences an existentialist transformation as he holds her baby, realizing that perhaps his recent loss of interest in his work and fence mending with Debi means that it is time to change his life. Unfortunately, this is soon followed by a violent encounter with LaPoubelle. Debi finds Blank in a hallway just after he has killed the hitman with a pen, still straddling the body. Horrified that Blank's "joke" about being a hitman was actually serious, she flees the reunion and refuses his attempts to reconcile. Cover of Sartres book Nausea Existentialism is a philosophical movement that claims that individual human beings have full responsibility for creating the meanings of their own lives. ...
Deciding there is no longer any point in trying to change his life, Blank finally opens the envelope containing his orders for the job that brought him to Grosse Pointe in the first place. He discovers that he was hired to kill Debi's father, Bart Newberry. Blank discovers that Grocer has also been hired to kill Bart (apparently after the client grew tired of Blank's procrastination), and Martin decides to protect him out of loyalty to Debi. This leads to a final shootout in which Blank kills Grocer and the federal agents while simultaneously proposing to Debi. Following the bloody showdown, Martin allows that she might need some time to think it over. Whether she accepts is not resolved, although the movie ends with Martin and Debi leaving Grosse Pointe together. Trivia - Martin, the hitman played by John Cusack, is accused of being a psycho. His response, "Don't rush to judgment on something like that until all the facts are in," is an echo of Buck Turgidson's response to the same assertion made about General Ripper in Stanley Kubrick's 1964 film Dr. Strangelove.
- The film features all but one of the Cusack siblings. John as Martin; Joan as Marcella; Ann as Amy, the drunk girl in the Hippo Club; and Bill as the waiter who serves them in the same club. The one who doesn't feature is Susie, who isn't primarily an actress.
- The movie features a Doom II arcade machine, a prop made for the movie. Doom was never made into an arcade video game. Also, the game is shown to jump between cuts through multiple levels.
- Only two scenes of the film were actually shot in Grosse Pointe: the shootout in the home, and a helicopter view of Lakeshore Drive. The city of Grosse Pointe did not allow the filmmakers to use any shots of the High School, named Grosse Pointe South, for the movie. Nor was any other part of the city filmed.
