Grove Hill is a town located in Clarke County, Alabama. As of the 2000 census, the population of the town is 1,438. The city is the county seat of Clarke County.

Grove Hill is located at 31°42'22.093" North, 87°46'27.386" West (31.706137, -87.774274)1.


According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 12.9 km˛ (5.0 mi˛). 12.9 km˛ (5.0 mi˛) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,438 people, 582 households, and 387 families residing in the town. The population density is 111.7/km˛ (289.6/mi˛). There are 684 housing units at an average density of 53.1/km˛ (137.8/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 61.96% White, 37.27% Black or African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.21% from other races, and 0.35% from two or more races. 0.35% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 582 households out of which 27.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.9% are married couples living together, 17.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.5% are non-families. 32.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.35 and the average family size is 2.99.


In the town the population is spread out with 23.2% under the age of 18, 9.9% from 18 to 24, 25.8% from 25 to 44, 23.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 91.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 82.6 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $31,012, and the median income for a family is $36,833. Males have a median income of $35,481 versus $20,438 for females. The per capita income for the town is $16,459. 18.5% of the population and 13.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 23.3% of those under the age of 18 and 26.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
