The Grungust series have a similar outlook overall. Being super robots, they are somewhat bulky with thick armor and are significantly larger in proportion to the Personal Troopers. The body parts generally look very thick with simplistic, cartoon-like body lines. The color schemes of the Grungusts vary, but are usually portrayed in a garish red, blue, and yellow tri-color paintjob. The Super Robot Mazinger Z. Technical And Historical

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

The original Grungust unit in Super Robot Wars 4, Super Robot Wars F and Super Robot Wars F Final was one of two upgraded machines your original characters could obtain late in the game. As the series developed further, the Grungust series was given a more detailed background, and more variations of the design were introduced.

In the Original Generation universe, a prototype to the Grungust series is developed first, the SRG-00 Grungust Type 0 (Grungust Reishiki). Lacking the transformation features of later units, this unit was fairly basic and gave the concept that Telsa Leicht Institute were attempting to accomplish. Its generator is taken from an Earth Federation Army space battleship, and in order to accommodate its massive size, the Grungust itself was made with a heavy, tall body, covered with thick armor. As the first true super robot, it eschews the conventional weapons of |Mao Industries' Gespenst series and Isurugi Industries' Lion series instead, focusing on melee combat -- its main weapons being a powerful rocket-propelled Boost Knuckle and a chest-mounted energy weapon, the Hyper Blaster. In addition, by request of its pilot Sanger Zonvolt, a third weapon was created by Tesla Leicht's Rishu Togo, a large Colossal Blade (Zankantou in the original version), which could sink a battleship on its own. Completed sometime later, just in time to assist the Hagane in its Earth offensive against the Divine Crusaders, the SRG-01 Grungust itself was an exceptional unit. Using the Type 0 as a base, it adds to its offensive capabilities by creating two vehicular modes for added mobility: Gust Wing (an aerial unit) and Gust Lander (a tank unit). In addition, the Grungust makes use of another specially-designed sword, the Calamity Sword (Keitou Ragouken in the original version). Instead of utilizing a standard Personal Trooper cockpit, the Grungust uses a brain wave controller to compensate for the unit's heavy weight and sluggish controls, and a voice activated command system for activating attacks. Delivered to the Hagane by Tesla Leicht's Jonathan Kazahara, his son, Irmgult Kazahara, would utilize this weapon. In Super Robot Wars Alpha, Irm would use a modified version of the original Grungust, the SRG-01C Grungust Kai. This unit was the original Grungust with better armor, a Tronium Engine to power it, and the Gravicon System (utilized in the Huckebein MK II), which allowed it to fly. Because of the Tronium Engine, the transformation abilities have been removed as redundant. The SRG-02 Grungust Type 2 (Grungust Nishiki) is the successor to the original Grungust, also created by Tesla Leicht Institute near the tail end of the war with the Divine Crusaders. In battle, it is roughly equivalent to the first Grungust, however, its armor seems to be lighter in order to lower production costs. In addition, the transformation abilities have been limited so that it can only transform into the flying G-Hawk, though it has also been modified using new technology so that the transforming sequence can occur twice as fast. This unit uses Extra Over Technology, alien technology recovered from Meteor-3's crash site. It also utilizes a T-Link System for Psychodrivers to use. In the Alpha games, the player's chosen main characters gain this unit after it suddenly crashes into their school (which later actually turns out to be something that was planned, since they are promising Psychodrivers). During Alpha, according to Kusuha Mizuha's storyline, after the Choukijin join you, they absorb the Grungust Nishiki into their being to repair themselves, before combining to form the RyuKoOh/KoRyuOh. In the Original Generation games, Kusuha would receive the Grungust Type-2 to pilot on her own. Here, the Type-2 was a testbed for a possible series of mass produced mecha, thought to replace the Earth Federation Army's units. Later on, a mass produced version of the Grungast Nishiki would be created - the RSR-02 Grungust Nishiki-M. This unit is slightly weaker than the original and has completely omitted the transformation abilities. It still has high production costs, however, and therefore, only a few of these were made.

Created sometime after the L-5 Campaign, the war with the Aerogaters, the SRG-03 Grungust Type-3 (Grungust Sanshiki) is a very powerful machine with exceptionally higher output, armor, and attack power compared to its predecessors. This unit is a two-seater with the ability to divide into the G-Raptor (for aerial combat) and the G-Bison (a tank for land combat). However, this ability has yet to be demonstrated. In the Alpha series, two were created: the first was destroyed during its creation, and the parts were incorporated into RyuKoOh/KoRyuOh. The second Grungust Type-3 unit would be sent to the Earth Cradle for Sanger Zonvolt's use. Sophia Nate would develop the Colossal Blade for him. In Super Robot Wars Alpha Gaiden, in the bleak future, the Grungust Sanshiki would be infected by Machine Cells to become the Thrudgelmir. In Super Robot Wars Alpha 2, after the Earth Cradle is attacked, Sanger sorties in the Type-3 and does battle with it. Sanger would use this until it is heavily damaged in combat. He switches to the Dygenguar, but keeps the Type-3's Colossal Blade as its main weapon. In Original Generation 2, three Grungast Type-3 units were developed. Sanger received the second one and similar events to the Alpha series occurred with him. The first unit was utilized by Brooklyn 'Bullet' Luckfield and Kusuha. After their encounter with the Choukijin in Original Generation 2, the Grungast Type-3 would be absorbed by them to repair them (rather than how the Type-2 was in Alpha). It is said the Type-3's Boost Knuckle became KoRyuOh's Tiger Knuckle and the drills mounted on its back became KoRyuOh's Variable Drill. After the war in Original Generation 2 ends, the Choukijin are sealed in Tesla Leicht Institute to prevent it from being appropriated by the Earth Federation Army, and the third Grungust Type-3 unit is handed to Bullet. It is equipped with the Shishion Blade, a katana designed exclusively for Bullet's use. The first and third Type-3 units are also equipped with T-Link Systems for Psychodriver use.
