Gruver is a city located in Hansford County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 1,162.

Gruver is located at 36°15'46" North, 101°24'19" West (36.262731, -101.405143)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.8 km² (1.1 mi²). 2.8 km² (1.1 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,162 people, 439 households, and 327 families residing in the city. The population density is 419.3/km² (1,089.0/mi²). There are 509 housing units at an average density of 183.7/km² (477.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 80.12% White, 0.00% African American, 0.69% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 17.21% from other races, and 1.98% from two or more races. 28.31% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 439 households out of which 39.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 64.9% are married couples living together, 5.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.3% are non-families. 23.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.65 and the average family size is 3.15.


In the city the population is spread out with 31.3% under the age of 18, 6.5% from 18 to 24, 27.0% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 100.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 99.0 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $32,031, and the median income for a family is $37,333. Males have a median income of $26,375 versus $17,143 for females. The per capita income for the city is $18,408. 16.2% of the population and 12.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 21.5% of those under the age of 18 and 16.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Gruver is on State Highway 15 and the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad in central Hansford County.
The town was named for Joseph Hezkiah Gruver and his son, Lawrence, who around 1907 established a ranch nine miles west of what is now the townsite.
