Encyclopedia > Guide Star Catalog

The Guide Star Catalog (GSC) is also known as the Hubble Space Telescope, Guide Catalog (HSTGC). It is a star catalogue built to support the Hubble Space Telescope with targetting off-axis stars. It contains approximately 20,000,000 celestial bodies with apparent magnitudes of 6 to 15.

When quoting a catalog entry, typically you write GSC FFFFF-NNNNN, or alternately, GSCfffff0nnnnn (fffff0nnnnn). The F-sequence references a Hubble sky region code.

The Guide Star Catalog I (GSC I) is an all-sky optical catalog of positions and magnitudes of approximately 19 million stars and other objects in the 6th to 15th magnitude range.
GSC I catalog is used for the control and target acquistion of the Hubble Space Telesope.
The Guide Star Photometric Catalog (GSPC-I) is an all-sky set of photoelectrically determined BV sequences in the magnitude range from 9 to 15, generally near the centers of the fields of the GSC-I plates.
HST Guide Star Catalog (596 words)
This catalogue contains objects in the magnitude range 7-16 and the classification was biased to prevent the use of a non-stellar object as a guide star.
By merging these data with the GSC, we were able to add the missing bright star data to provide a complete all-sky catalogue down to the GSC limiting magnitude.
The recalibrated catalog is available on CDROM, and a GSCACT option which does the recalibration on the fly may be added to WCSTools.
