Guillermo Vilas (born August 17, 1952 in Buenos Aires, Argentina) is a former Argentine professional tennis player.
A left-handed baseliner Vilas' best season on tour was 1977 when he not only won two of the four majors but also 16 of the 31 ATP tournaments he entered (absolute record in the Open Era), a record which at the time had only ever been equaled by the legendary Rod Laver.
Vilas is single-handedly responsible for the popularity of tennis in Argentina or even Latin America.
Print Article: Pioneer Vilas still holds court in Melbourne (734 words)
Vilas came to Melbourne this week on the 25th anniversary of his first Australian Open title, which was actually December 1978, when he defeated John Marks, one of those embarrassingly low-ranked finalists of that era, in the final at Kooyong.
Vilas is well aware of his standing in his homeland, which he gets back to regularly, for his tennis club.
Vilas used to practise for hours on end, devoting time to preparing that was unprecedented (though he says he also learned this from Australians, such as Rosewall).
