NationMaster - Encyclopedia: Helmeted Guineafowl (565 words)
Although deeper than the call of the helmeted guineafowl, the crested guineafowl alarm call is also a staccato "chuk-chuk-chukchukerr." The lower pitch may be due, in part, to its windpipe being housed in the hollowed-out blade of its wishbone.
Helmeted guineafowl are the most omnivorous of the guineafowl species, taking a broad range of plant and animal material (even small toads) from above and below the ground, switching their preferences to whatever appears to be abundant at the time, but focusing on insects and other arthropods during the breeding season.
The word meleagris, Greek for guineafowl, is also shared in the scientific names of the two species, although for the guineafowl it is the species name, whereas for the turkey, it is the name of the genus and (in an altered state) the family.
Helmeted Guineafowl (189 words)
The bill is short and stout; the body is stocky and fl and dotted uniformly with white spots; and the wings are medium sized and rounded.
Our helmeted guineafowl have free range at the zoo, so be sure to give them their space, as they are scared easily.
Interesting Facts: Helmeted guineafowl are able to fly, although they are mainly terrestrial, spending most of their time on the ground.
