The gull wing is a distinctive aircraft configuration that gives the wings a pronounced bend close to the fuselage. Usually intended to solve propeller clearance problems, it can lift flying boat's engines higher above the ocean to avoid spray. In ground-based aircraft it often is inverted, allowing the landing gear to be shorter and sturdier.
