Location of Gulu within Uganda. Gulu is the commercial and administrative centre of Gulu District in Uganda, located at 2˚46'00N 32˚16'00E, on the railway from Tororo to Pakwach. It is the second-largest town by population in the country, with a population of 119,430 (2002 census). The town is served by Gulu Airport. The town is a government military base for operations against the rebel Lord's Resistance Army. Up to 15,000 children, known as "night commuters", were fleeing into the town for safety every evening. Gulu is the economic capital of Northern Uganda. The last 21 years have been war ridden, with many attacks by the LRA. However, since the spring of 2007, there has been relative peace since Joseph Kony - the leader of the LRA, is rumoured to have moved into Southern Sudan and the Central African Republic. These times of peace have brought much peace to the area and the town of Gulu is begining to thrive economically again. There are still many Internally Displaced Peoples camps (IDP) throughout the area, where an estimated 2 million people are living. Peace has also brought very much help from the international community in terms of Non-Government Organizations. These NGO's are helping the community in various way bu providing food, medical help, rehibilitation centers for formely abducted children, and has also created many jobs in the area. Gulu is also the home of Gulu University, who have a wide range of programs from medicine to agriculture. Sustainable initiative are very important for the area. THE Acholi people are the main inhabitants of Gulu (80%) and many are christian by faith. There are a range of spoken lnaguages from Luo (sometimes spelled Lwo), Swahili, English and Lugandan to name a few.
