Gunn first crossed paths with Angel in 2000 in a case of mistaken identity; he observed Angel roughing up a flmailer and then tried unsuccessfully to dust him.
Yet even in his grief, Gunn realized that he could not commit the same crime twice and allow Cordelia to suffer the same fate and so he joined Angel, Wesley and Lorne to instigate her rescue.
