Encyclopedia > Gunnar Kaasen

Gunnar Kaasen (1882 - 1964) was a Norwegian musher.


Kaasen was born in Burfjord, Norway and went to the United States to mine for gold in Alaska in 1903.


He became an experienced musher, and with his lead dog Balto he drove the last 53 miles to Nome in the winter of 1925 with diphtheria serum, saving the town from an epidemic. The annual Iditarod sled-dog race commemorates this historic event.

In the winter of 1925, a diphtheria epidemic among Eskimos in Nome was halted when, during fierce blizzard conditions, a sled team arrived with serum.
The sled driver was Gunnar Kaasen and the lead sled dog was Balto.
A statue of Balto by F.G. Roth stands near the zoo in Central Park, New York, as does one in downtown Anchorage, Alaska.
