The Gunnery is a coeducational college preparatory boarding and day school for 9th-12th grade students. "Frederick W. Gunn, teacher, individualist, outdoorsman, believed strength of character to be the goal of true education. In 1850 he established a school that cultivated scholarship, physical fitness, mutual respect and personal integrity - the four cornerstones on which character is built. The Gunnery of today still stands squarely on the principles of its founder. A skilled and committed faculty leads a diverse student body in a comprehensive college preparatory curriculum, rigorous athletics and a broad array of artistic and social activities. The values of citizenship and social responsibility are reinforced in a small, cohesive community which promotes maturity, dedication and lifelong accomplishment." www.gunnery.org
To assist the gunnery students with their target tracking, tracer shells were interspersed with the regular ammunition.
With the entire gunnery range firing at the same target at the same time, it was nearly impossible to determine which tracers were yours.
When this paticular class completed their gunnery training course and returned to Cherry Point, the pilots who scored the highest in their gunnery class, were assigned to become the fighter pilots who would fly the F6F Hellcats providing cover for the squadron on Photo Reconnaissance Missions.
After a two-month absence due to a combination of lousy weather, hectic schedules and plain laziness, I was back in the mountains on 24 December 2006 for a short trip up Gunnery Mountain in the Highwood area of Kananaskis Country.
