Mainly a housing estate, Gunthorpe possesses two public houses - the Harrier and the Old John Clare, two schools Norwood Primary and Gunthorpe Primary, a hair salon, a couple of shops as well as a Methodist Church and Community Centre. To the south lies the Barn Garden Centre and the mullti-national APV manufacturers. Building began in the 1950s and continued largely until the early 1990s. The developments symbolise the two identities of Gunthorpe - North and South, with the dividing line being Gunthorpe Road. The South consists largely of council housing, with the local school being Gunthorpe Primary and is politically part of Paston. The more affluent North consists of private detached housing, the local school being Norwood and is politically part of South Werrington, which is a five minute walk. Essentially, Gunthorpe is a family district, built for children as well as the elderly and possessing a safe, neighbourly appeal and low crime rate. Geographically, Gunthorpe lies to the south of Werrington and north of Paston, with Fulbridge Road to the west, Car Dyke, the Roman ditch, straddles Gunthorpe's east side. No further developments have been planned for district. |
