The Gunwhale, pronounced "gunnel" to rhyme with "tunnel", is a nautical term describing the top line of planking of a boat's sides.


In the age of sailing warships, the upper tier of guns used to fire over the top planking which was therefore specially strengthened by extra wooden "whales".
