Artistic

Unfortunately many of the artistic competitions were marred by irregular scoring which led to three officials being suspended when they under marked South Korea's Yang Tae Young in the men's all around competition leaving United States Paul Hamm to take gold. It should also be pointed out that the judges missed an additional hold during one of Young's routines, which if scored correctly would have lowered his score such that he wouldn't have medaled at all. Similar problems marred the men's team competition as well. Yang Tae Young (born July 8, 1980, Seoul, South Korea) is a South Korean 2004 Olympic medalist in artistic gymnastics. ... Paul Hamm (born September 24, 1982 in Waukesha, Wisconsin) is a US gymnast. ...

On the final evening of competition the crowd delayed the Men's High Bar apparatus final when they continued to boo the low marks awarded to Alexei Nemov. Alexei Yurievich Nemov (Russian: Алексей Юрьевич Немов; born May 28, 1976, Barashevo) is a famous gymnast from Russia. ...

Two gymnasts had to withdraw from Athens Olympics before the Games started due to serious injuries. German gymnast Ronny Ziesmer was paralysed [1] after an accident during a practice in training camp in Kienbaum, July 14. Joanna Skowronska of Poland was also severely injured when she broke her neck whilst training August 12, only two weeks before the opening of Olympic gymnastics competitions. Both were replaced by substitutes, which caused Poland to lose its womens gymnastics spot to Argentina (Germany entered male team and used its nation's substitute).

Men's Artistic qualifier

The qualifier was held on 14 August 2004. For teams, four or five out of the six team members competed in each of the six apparatus. If five competed, the lowest score for the apparatus was dropped. The total score for the twenty-four results was the team score. Individual team members competed in anywhere from two to all six apparatus, with their all-around score being the sum of their scores in each apparatus. Gymnasts not part of teams also competed in the qualifier, attempting to qualify for the individual competitions. August 14 is the 226th day of the year in the Gregorian Calendar (227th in leap years), with 139 days remaining. ... 2004 (MMIV) was a leap year starting on Thursday of the Gregorian calendar. ...

Ranking for the apparatus is in parentheses. Finalists' scores are highlighted.

The Korean gymnastics team contested Yang's horizontal bars score after judges misidentified one of the elements of his routine. The effect of this misidentification was that the start value was recorded as 9.9 rather than 10. The Court of Arbitration for Sport dismissed the Korean Olympic Committee's appeal, on the grounds that 1) the appeal, coming after the end of competition, was made too late and 2) insufficient evidence of corruption or bad faith on the part of the judges was presented to overturn a strong preference for a "field of play" judgment rather than one made after the fact. Rhythmic

The rhythmic gymnastics competition was open only to female competitors.

Another judging debacle swept into the rhythmic gymnastics portion of the 2004 Olympic Games. The United States gymnastics team protested the technical score of 4.600 (out of 10.000) that American rhythmic gymnast Mary Sanders received in her hoop routine during individual all-around qualifications. The claim stated that the score was unusually low, especially considering that Sanders had frequently scored much higher than that in National and World competitions, and that her Olympic hoop routine was free of visible or serious errors. The FIG, however, declined the protest, and additionally, never cited an explanation for the decline (or the judging decision). Ultimately, Sanders received a 21.250 (out of 30.000) in the hoop routine, leaving her to finish in 15th place out of 24, and failing to qualify into the Finals.
