HMS Exploit is an Archer-class patrol and training vessel of the British Royal Navy, built in Woolston by, Vosper Thornycroft and commissioned in 1988. She is attached to Birmingham University Royal Naval Unit (URNU), that exists to provide training to undergraduate students in a wide range of naval skills. The URNU also provides excellent opportunities for personal development. She has a crew of 4 and can take a maximum of 12 students at any one time. Ships Company Executive Officer
CPO (MW) Graham Walker joined the Royal Navy in October 1976 as a Junior Seaman Operator specialising in Mine Warfare (MW). After training at HMS Vernon his first ship was the Mine Sweeper HMS Wilton. His career has included service on a number of different Ships including the type 12 Frigate HMS Torquay and modern Sandown Class Mine Hunters. He has also served on the staff of Flag Officer Scotland Northern England and Northern Ireland. Within the NATO environment he was the Staff CPO (MW) Warfare for the NATO on call MCM Squadron. Chief Walker joined HMS Exploit in July 2005 as the Executive Officer. He lives with his wife Helen in St.Helens
Marine Engineering Officer
CPOMEA Andy Davies joined the Royal Navy in May 1995 as an Artificer Apprentice. After initial basic training at HMS Raleigh he spent a year of sea training onboard HMS Battleaxe before completing his Marine Engineering Apprenticeship and being promoted LMEA at HMS Sultan. On Completion, he returned to sea for continuation training onboard HMS Monmouth, where he was promoted to POMEA in January 2000. He then returned ashore working at Surface Fleet Maintenance in Devonport. Promoted to CPOMEA March 2002, Chief Davies joined HMS Exploit in July 2004. A keen sportsman he is an avid follower of the reinvigorated Welsh Rugby Union side.
Weapons Engineering Officer
LMEM Chris Rowe joined the Royal Navy in November 1995. After Marine Engineering training at HMS Sultan he joined the Aircraft Carrier HMS Illustrious, completing a Far East deployment in conjunction with the Hong Kong handover. In 1998 following a short period ashore he joined the Helicopter Carrier HMS Ocean in build. The draft onboard HMS Ocean coincided with hurricane relief in Honduras and operational service in Sierra Leone. Promoted LMEM in 2001 he joined the Mine Hunter HMS Sandown. The programme of the Mine Hunter proved as diverse as that of the Capital Ships including service in the Mediterranean and the 2003 Gulf conflict. After a short draft to the Northern Diving Group LMEM Rowe joined HMS Exploit as the Weapon Engineering Officer in March 2005. He lives with his Fiancée Tricia, in Scotland.
Navigators Yeoman
OM (MW) Kev Aston joined the Royal Navy in June 1998. After completing Mine Warfare (MW) training at HMS Dryad he joined the Sandown class Mine Hunter HMS Walney. On completion of a deployment to the Baltic and Mediterranean he continued his professional training at HMS Collingwood. In 2001 he joined HMS Bridport and deployed once again to the Mediterranean as part of the NATO Mine Counter Measures Force Mediterranean. OM Aston joined HMS Exploit in early June 2005. His main Interest outside of his Naval Career is photography.
