The HSBC Champions tournament is a men's professional golf tournament which was played for the first time in Shanghai, China on 10-13 November 2005. It had a prize fund of $5 million, which was much higher than for any event previously held in Asia. The event is sanctioned by the European Tour, the Asian Tour, the Southern African Sunshine Tour and the PGA Tour of Australasia. The prize money counts towards the European Tour Order of Merit, but is not official money event on the Asian Tour; the first prize of $833,300 will probably be more than the total amount won by the 2005 Asian Tour Order of Merit winner, so it could distort the results if it were included. This event marked an acceleration of the European's Tour's push into East Asia, and especially into China, which is probably the most significant aspect of the Tour's evolution in recent years.
