The Swedes rebelled against the Anund Gårdske because he did not want to worship the Norse gods and Håkan the Red became king, 1070-1079, although he was a Christian. Håkan was probably an illegitimate son of Stenkil's. The cognomen red refers to his red hair.


He is said to have been from Westrogothia and he ruled for thirteen years until he died from an illness. During the last years he ruled together with Stenkil's son Ingold I.

The red iron gneiss prevails in western Sweden in the provinces of Vermland, Skaraborg, Elfsborg, and down to the province of Kristianstad.
The formation is very uniform in its character, the gneiss having a red colour and containing small granules of magnetite, but, nevertheless, not a single iron mine belongs to this region.
A prince called Haakon the Red now appears as king of Sweden and is said to have occupied the throne for thirteen years.
