The town was rebuilt around the time the castle was after the previous one burnt down. The forest surrounding the castle is said to have been uprooted from a larger forest on the opposite side of utrecht, the towns houses being torn down to move the trees. These were then planted where the owner wanted so that he had a forets without waiting. Though, when finished, the owner went on a 5 year honeymoon not seeing the forest. It is famous for De Haar Castle, which is surrounded by gardens. The castle attracted 76,500 visitors in 2002.
