Justice Habibur Rahman was named as head of the non-party, caretaker government after Khaleda, facing mounting opposition pressure to quit, had asked the president to start the process of transferring power.
President Abdur Rahman Biswas dissolved the parliament chosen in February 15 elections and appointed Habibur Rahman as Chief Adviser in the new administration.
Rahman's principal job would be holding new elections within 90 days of his appointment but he told reporters on Saturday night that his immediate responsibility was to restore law and order.
