http://www.haighomes.org.uk/ Douglas Haig Memorial Homes, known as Haig Homes, is a Charitable Housing Association and was established as a memorial to Field Marshal Earl Haig of Bemersyde KT GCB OM GCVO KCIE who died in January 1928. In March 1928, on the inception of the Trust, the then Prince of Wales said; “…….there are three reasons which urge a whole nation thus to perpetuate the memory of an individual. The first is gratitude for great service to the community. The second is recognition in him of certain qualities held to be typical of all that is best in the national character and to be worthy of lasting remembrance. The third is the practical desire to carry out the work he was doing which death has interrupted. In the present instance, this threefold justification is surely abundantly evident!” Earl Haig worked tirelessly in his retirement to highlight and solve many problems facing ex-Service people and their families. He was particularly concerned with the plight of those disabled during their service in theatres of War and the difficulties created by this in their civilian lives. The aim of the Charity is to provide homes for former members of HM Armed Services and for their families, bereaved or separated spouses and dependants who are in need of housing. The Association has almost 1,300 houses, flats, maisonettes and bungalows throughout the UK, built mostly in the 1930’s, 1950’s and 1990’s. Some are subject to the nomination rights of the original service or regimental organisation which donated the funds for the building. The properties in Jersey are subject to residential qualification for the States of Jersey. Tenancies are allocated on the basis of suitability and need except where this would lead to unsustainable tenancies or unstable communities. Haig Homes also incorporates The Housing Association for Officers’ Families (HAOF) which was founded in 1916 by Mrs Willie James with similar objects of providing homes for the widows and dependants of Service Officers and disabled Officers and their dependants. HAOF was incorporated into Haig Homes on 1st April 1995. Two smaller Trusts are managed by Haig Homes The Charles Wray Pension Trust Mrs Willie James Charitable Trust |
