The gourde is the currency of Haiti. Its ISO 4217 code is HTG and it is divided into 100 centimes. ISO 4217 is the international standard describing three letter codes (also known as the currency code) to define the names of currencies established by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). ...


The first gourde was introduced in 1813. It replaced the livre at a rate of 1 gourde = 8 livre 5 sous. In 1870 and again in 1872, the gourde was revalued, first at a rate of ten to one, then at a rate of three hundred to one. In this period, when only banknotes were being issued, the name piastre was sometimes used instead of gourde, especially on a banknote issue dated 1875. In 1881, the gourde was linked to the French franc at 5 francs = 1 gourde and coin production recommenced. The livre was the currency of Haiti until 1813. ...
