Encyclopedia > Half shaft

A half shaft is an automotive term used to describe a driveshaft that goes from a vehicle's differential to one of the driven wheels.

It is so called because it will typically be transmitting half of the available power that is supplied to the differential to which it is connected.

This shaft was then welded directly to the frame, after the crank arms and hub were slipped onto it, by a small piece of shaft with an oil impregnated bushing pressed into it to allow for better rotation.
The purpose of the half shafts and the universal joints (u-joints) is to transmit torque from the roller clutches to the wheels.
The half shafts connect to the inner shaft of the clutches and to the stub axle on the wheel side with u-joints.
