Aerial Photo of the Peninsula The peninsula, bordered by Halifax Harbour, the Northwest Arm, and the Bedford Basin, is the part of Halifax that was first settled. The city was built within a network of Citadels on the eastern edge of the peninsula, although only one of these still remains. The city eventually expanded to the north, south, and west. This area still contains the city's financil district, likely the most important of the Atlantic Provinces'. It is also an important cultural center, with many attractions including Citadel Hill, the Public Gardens, Neptune Theatre, the Halifax Metro Centre, several post-seconday institutions, including Dalhousie and Saint Mary's universities, a major naval base, and the most bars per capita of any Canadian city. The Halifax airport was originally located in the West End, although when the area became more developed it was forced to relocate to Enfield. Halifax Peninsula, aerial photo. ...
