Hamblen County is a county located in the state of Tennessee. As of 2000, the population is 58,128. Its county seat is Morristown6.

History and Culture

Hamblen County was created in 1870 from Jefferson, Grainger, and Greene Counties. The county is named in honor of Hezekiah Hamblen (1775 - 1854), an early settler, landowner, attorney, and member of the Hawkins County Court for many years.


Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 455 km˛ (176 mi˛). 417 km˛ (161 mi˛) of it is land and 38 km˛ (15 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 8.39% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 58,128 people, 23,211 households, and 16,595 families residing in the county. The population density is 139/km˛ (361/mi˛). There are 24,693 housing units at an average density of 59/km˛ (153/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 90.72% White, 4.12% Black or African American, 0.22% Native American, 0.58% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 3.32% from other races, and 0.99% from two or more races. 5.68% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 23,211 households out of which 30.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.10% are married couples living together, 11.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.50% are non-families. 24.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.47 and the average family size is 2.91.


In the county, the population is spread out with 23.30% under the age of 18, 8.90% from 18 to 24, 29.60% from 25 to 44, 24.90% from 45 to 64, and 13.30% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 97.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.50 males.


The median income for a household in the county is $32,350, and the median income for a family is $39,138. Males have a median income of $30,009 versus $21,309 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,743. 14.40% of the population and 10.50% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 18.80% are under the age of 18 and 15.80% are 65 or older.
