Hana is a census-designated place located in Maui County, Hawaii. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 709. Hana is located at the eastern end of the island of Maui and is one of the most isolated towns in the state. It is reached mainly via the Hana Highway, a long, winding highway along Maui's northern shore.


Hana is considered one of the last outposts for hippies in Hawaii. Near Hana are several swimming holes run by the National Park Service as part of Haleakala National Park.

Hana is located at 20°46'12" North, 155°59'39" West (20.770017, -155.994179)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 9.0 km˛ (3.5 mi˛). 5.6 km˛ (2.2 mi˛) of it is land and 3.4 km˛ (1.3 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 37.64% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 709 people, 191 households, and 139 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 126.2/km˛ (326.0/mi˛). There are 253 housing units at an average density of 45.0/km˛ (116.3/mi˛). The racial makeup of the CDP is 13.26% White, 0.14% African American, 0.00% Native American, 6.91% Asian, 39.92% Pacific Islander, 0.28% from other races, and 39.49% from two or more races. 6.35% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 191 households out of which 29.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.7% are married couples living together, 14.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.2% are non-families. 22.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.71 and the average family size is 4.40.


In the CDP the population is spread out with 31.6% under the age of 18, 11.0% from 18 to 24, 22.7% from 25 to 44, 25.0% from 45 to 64, and 9.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 31 years. For every 100 females there are 89.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 98.0 males.


The median income for a household in the CDP is $50,833, and the median income for a family is $54,167. Males have a median income of $26,146 versus $22,969 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $14,672. 8.6% of the population and 5.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 10.4% of those under the age of 18 and 3.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
