Hanapepe is a census-designated place located in Kauai County, Hawaii. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 2,153.

Hanapepe is located at 21°54'59" North, 159°35'25" West (21.916392, -159.590414)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 2.5 km˛ (1.0 mi˛). 2.3 km˛ (0.9 mi˛) of it is land and 0.3 km˛ (0.1 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 10.31% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,153 people, 706 households, and 533 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 955.5/km˛ (2,469.8/mi˛). There are 757 housing units at an average density of 336.0/km˛ (868.4/mi˛). The racial makeup of the CDP is 16.02% White, 0.09% African American, 0.28% Native American, 48.58% Asian, 8.50% Pacific Islander, 0.23% from other races, and 26.29% from two or more races. 8.64% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 706 households out of which 41.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.2% are married couples living together, 12.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.4% are non-families. 19.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.05 and the average family size is 3.54.


In the CDP the population is spread out with 32.0% under the age of 18, 6.5% from 18 to 24, 29.4% from 25 to 44, 20.1% from 45 to 64, and 12.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 103.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 98.9 males.


The median income for a household in the CDP is $44,112, and the median income for a family is $50,750. Males have a median income of $30,039 versus $24,224 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $17,043. 6.6% of the population and 5.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 7.7% of those under the age of 18 and 10.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
