Hanworth is little different from most English towns with a high proportion of council estates. The flats are uniform and utterly without charm; many have graffiti scrawled on their otherwise drab walls. The pubs are several decades overdue for a re-fit and play host to a simmering undercurrent of drunken tension. The shops, being purpose built to serve the estates, are almost indistinguishable from them by architecture, and sell largely own-brand food and womens weekly magazines. It is no surprise to find a washing machine sitting dumped in a car-park, or an old sofa in the street, waiting forlornly for someone from the council to tow it away to a landfill. Gangs of teenagers hang around outside the shops, smoking cigarettes and constantly spitting on the pavement. Hanworth is not a bad area, nor a dangerous one; it is merely grim and a little uncomfortable. When you leave, you feel the tension lift slightly, and the sun seems to shine a little brighter.
