Hardanger embroidery is a form of embroidery worked in white yarn on a coloured Hardanger cloth, using drawn thread work.


It is a form of counted-thread embroidery


It originates from the Hardanger district in Western Norway.


Amongst the special techniques used are:

  • cording: overcasting over several threads to make a cord
  • woven bars: weaving the needle over and under three threads until they are completely covered.
  • picot: twisting the thread once round the needle before inserting the needle.
  • four sided stitch: forming adjoining squares.

Hardanger, or Hardangersom, is a form of whitework using counted thread and drawn thread work.
While the history of Hardanger embroidery is not well documented, it was popular during the Renaissance period, when the use of linen for clothing increased.
The eight-pointed star of Hardanger embroidery is also found in the embroidery of India and is a universal symbol.

Hardanger embroidery, as we know it today, is a form of openwork which originated in the south western Norwegian fjord country of Hardanger.
Traditional hardanger embroidery is worked on white linen or cotton that has between 22 and 55 threads to the inch.
Hardanger is very precise and takes time and effort to accomplish well, but is very rewarding to do.
