Harihara I, also called as Vira Harihar I, was the founder of the Vijayanagara empire, one of the best known empires of the Indian subcontinent. He was Sangama’s eldest son and was founder of the Sangama dynasty (1336-1485), the first among the four dynasties that ruled Vijayanagara. He reigned from 1336 until 1354 or 1356, and established his capital on the bank of Tungabhadra River. He founded and expanded his kingdom with the assistance of his four brothers who were appointed by him as viceroys of different regions reporting to a central administration. An inscription dated 1348 regarding a grant to Sringerimath indicates Harihara I as the ruler of “whole country between the eastern and the western seas, and the inscription describes Vidya Nagara (that is, the city of learning) as his capital.
