Jack Bauer, who was also kept safe from the attack, finds a computer that can flush the gas out of CTU, making the air safe to breathe. However, the computer is out of his reach; they find the holding cell Lynn is inside is close enough that he could use it to activate the ventilation system. However, this would mean the gas would infiltrate the room they're inside, as he would have to leave the room to get to the computer. Hesitantly, Lynn opens the door to his holding cell to activate the ventilation computer. Although Swinton attempts to hold his breath until Lynn gets back and closes the door, the gas is already inside the room; Harry soon dies along with McGill.

Swinton has a young daughter, who he talks to briefly before his death (which he does not tell her about).
