Encyclopedia > Hartney, Manitoba
Town's Grain Elevator.

Hartney, established as a town in 1882 in Cameron municipality along the Souris River, is a small town in the South-Western portion of the Canadian province of Manitoba, population 446. In 1881, settlers sailed upstream on the Souris River looking for suitable new settlements. They came upon the current site of Souris and discovered the perfect spot for a townsite. At the first town meeting, half of the residents proclaimed "Finally, a town where we shall be free to marry our cousins!" The other half did not agree on this viewpoint, and those in favor of marrying their own cousin were cast up river, to the site where Hartney lies to this day. Those orginal settlers started their town in 1882 where it remains to this day.
