Hashim (died ca. 510) was the great-grandfather of Muhammad and head of the Banu Hashim clan of the Quraish tribe. According to tradition, he was a descendant of Ishmael and thus Abraham. His real name was Amr, but he was nicknamed "Hashim" because of his practice of providing crumbled bread in broth for the pilgrims. His wife was Salma bint Amr, a woman of Madina. He is said to have died in Gaza in 497. His sons were Asad, Abu Saifi, Nadla, and Abd al-Muttalib (Muhammad's grandfather); his daughters, Ash-Shifa, Khalida, Da`ifa, Ruqayyah, and Jannah (according to Ibn Hisham).
