As of 2003, the city has an estimated population of 66,085 and the density of 1,232.01 persons per km². The total area is 53.64 km².


The city was founded on April 1, 1954.

Hashima was producing about 150,000 tons of coal annually and its population had soared to over 3,000 when, in 1916, Mitsubishi built a reinforced concrete apartment block on the island to alleviate the lack of housing space and to prevent typhoon damage.
The population of Hashima reached a peak of 5,259 in 1959.
The tight-knit Hashima community was a miniature version of Japanese society and it straddled a landmass that, except for the lack of water and greenery, mimicked the entire archipelago.
