The Hassan II Mosque (Arabic مسجد الحسن الثاني, French Mosquée Hassan II) is a mosque located in Casablanca, Morocco. It was designed by the French architect Michel Pinseau and is the second largest in the world (after the Masjid al-Haram in Mecca). It is sited on a promontory looking out to the Atlantic, which can be seen through a gigantic glass floor with room for 25,000 worshippers. A further 80,000 can be accommodated in the mosque's courtyard. Its minaret is also the world's tallest at 210m. Criticism

Many Moroccans have mixed feelings about Hassan II Mosque. On one hand, they are very proud that this beautiful monument dominates their city. On the other, they are aware that the expense (estimates range from $500 to 800 million) could have been put to better use and they resent the fact that the building of the mosque necessitated the destruction of a large, run-down section of Casablanca, whose residents did not receive any compensation.
