Hastings Diesels Limited - Ashford & Hastings line (964 words)
On leaving Rye for Hastings, travellers pass by a windmill close to the lineside; Winchelsea, the next halt, serves that village which — like Rye — is on a hill beyond the foot of the cliffs.
Having thus far survived the threat of closure, the line has undergone much rationalisation; this includes the withdrawal of services on a branch from Appledore to Lydd and Dungeness, closure of one station, the singling of more than 15 miles of double track, and the downgrading of most intermediate stations to unstaffed halts.
Our “Hastings” DEMU has been called into service on this line from time to time, as it is based nearby and is operationally similar to the other DEMUs.
Marshlink Line - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (393 words)
The South Eastern Railway eventually built the line, thereby renewing a local rivalry between itself and the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway ; the line was opened on 13 February 1851.
The line is single tracked, apart from the Ashford-Appledore and Ore to Hastings sections.
This line is one of the few in South-East England not to be electrified.
