This valley lies to the north of the Laugarvatn in the south of Iceland.
There are to be seen some of the most famous sights of the island, the geysers (Strokkur, Geysir) and not far away the waterfall Gullfoss. So the Haukadalur is also part of the Golden Circle, like Þingvellir.
Haukadalur, Iceland
The biggest geysers of Haukadalur are Strokkur and the Geysir itself which gave others their name. Strokkur is very dependable to have an eruption all 5 to 10 minutes, whereas the bigger Geysir only erupts 4 to 5 times a day. But there are also a lot of other little hot springs nearby.
Litli Geysir, Haukadalur, Iceland
The waterfall Gullfoss is about 10 km to the north in the direction of the Highlands of Iceland and at the beginning of the Kjölur highland road.
Haukadalur, Snæfellsnes
Another valley by the name Haukadalur is existing in the north-west of Snæfellsnes. The valley is situated some kilometers to the south of the village Búðardalur. There is the former residence of the vikingErik the Red (isl. Eirik Rauður) who discovered Greenland.
Haukadalur, Vestfirðir
A third valley of this name is to be found near Þingeyri, in the Westfjords (Vestfirðir).
Shortly before the turn of the 13th century, Haukadalur became the property of the southern see.
The land of Haukadalur once stretched all the way up to the crater row Jarlhettur, when the desert Haukadalsheidi was fully vegetated, but has now become one of the greatest erosion problems of the country.
He had expressed his wish of being buried in the cemetery of Haukadalur, where he is said to be resting.
